Two Readings and a Lecture

It’s been a busy November 2015! I spoke about 44 Hours or Strike! at the Free Times Café (Yiddish Vinkl) on Thurs. Nov. 5. We had a great time talking about the garment industry in Toronto and singing Yiddish songs together.

On Wed. Nov. 11, I spoke on the topic of “Uncertain Haven: Canada and the Jewish Displaced Persons” at the Ekstein Library as part of  Holocaust Education Week in the GTA. It’s always great to have such an appreciative audience. And we even had to bring in more chairs!

Finally, on Mon. Nov. 30, I spoke at the Terraces of Baycrest / Wagman Centre about 44 Hours or Strike!  It was a pleasure to read from my book, talk about research and writing, and sing Yiddish songs together. Thanks to everyone who attended the launch of 44 Hours or Strike! on Sun. Oct. 25/15 at the United Steelworkers Hall in Toronto. It was a wonderful event–reading, telling stories, singing, shmoozing, and eating 1930s-era treats. Now the book is truly on its way! Photo credit: Errol Young.

Launch of “44 Hours or Strike!”

The launch of my newest book, 44 Hours or Strike, will be on Sun. Oct. 25, 2.30 p.m., at the Steelworkers’ Union Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto (near College & Spadina). We’ll sing
union songs, eat Depression-era pastries, and share stories about the ILGWU and the
needle trades in Toronto. All are welcome. Lots of parking behind the building or easy access with the TTC.

Authors for Indies Day

I was pleased to participate in the first Authors for Indies (that’s Independent Bookstores) Day in Canada on Sat. May 2, 2015. I decided to go to the wonderful Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore in the Beach area of Toronto. I had a great time talking to the helpful, knowledgeable staff there and to some fellow authors like Dan Bar-El. Kids’ Lit Quiz

I had a great time at the Kids’ Lit Quiz heats on Feb. 5/15 at Armour Heights School along with my fellow author-teammates, Rona Arato and Jenn Gold. (We really know Fruit and Heroes, not so much Libraries!) The Canada National finals were held on Feb. 9/15 at Crescent School in Toronto, and the winning team was from Southridge School. They’ll travel to the World Final in Connecticut, USA, in July 2015.What a wonderful way to encourage kids to read! Toronto International Book Fair

I had a great time at Inspire! (Toronto International Book Fair) on Nov. 14/14. Here are photos of me with special people–Philippa Dowding, author of Jake and the Giant Hand (Dundurn) and Ken Setterington, author of Branded by the Pink Triangle (Second Story Press). On Sept. 1, I had the pleasure of reading (and singing) from my book, Written on the Wind, at Festival Ashkenaz in Toronto. It was a great day and I loved sharing my writing with the children and adults who dropped by! Thanks to Sonia Shklarov for her impromptu violin accompaniment and to Brent Pearlman from the Kensington Torah Circle for inviting me.

First Annual Vaughan Public Libraries’ Bookfest

Dufferin Clark LibraryI’ll participate in the first annual Vaughan (Ontario) Public Libraries’ Bookfest on Sun. Sept. 28, 1-4 p.m. at the Dufferin-Clark branch, 1441 Clark Avenue West, Thornhill. Bookfest is a celebration of books for people who write them and people who read them. It will feature local authors, writing workshops, a children’s corner, book swap, edible books exhibit and much, much more. I hope you’ll plan to attend!

I’ll talk about how I researched and wrote the book, share some clock and time stories, and celebrate sending the book out into the world. Open to the public. Prizes. Refreshments.
